People

According to 2011 census the Greater Giyani Municipality has a population size of 224,217, which makes it the second largest municipality in terms of population in the Mopani District. 99,5% of the people are black African with the other races making up the rest of the 0.5%. For every 100 women there are 79 men. Most people (90%) speak Xitsonga as their first language, followed by Sepedi (3,8%).

Living Conditions

According to Census 2011, the Greater Giyani Local Municipality has a total of 63 548 households, with an average household size of 3,8 persons per household. A total of 27 135 households (42,7%) are headed by males while 36 413 households (57,3%) are female-headed households. The municipality’s dependency ratio is 74,2.89% of the households use electricity for lighting, and 88% of households live in formal dwellings.
